VOMPC THANKSGIVING TOURNEY

November 25 – Though our club’s tournament is officially over for 2006, we couldn’t resist having one more day of boules playing. On a cold, crisp late Fall day, and with autumn leaves all over the courts, the VOMPC held its first ever “Gobboule Gobboule” Turkey Tournament. Thirty players showed up and Tournament Director Ed Porto efficiently organized 10 melee triplette teams. Savory Thanksgiving leftovers and other food were brought by everyone for a wonderful midday feast. Thanks go out to Peter Wellington for his delicious Wellington Vineyards wines that he provided. As the afternoon progressed and the weather became colder, the following teams were the winners:
1st Place: Shannon Bowman/Barbara Hall/Stephen Paulsen
2nd Place: John Byrne/Peter Wellington/Albert Woodbury
3rd Place: Cynthia Heinrichs/Jean-Marie Letellier/Ed Porto

PETANQUE Action

I received this Picture from Jose Gutierrez, a new Member at the South Florida Petanque Club in Lake Worth, FL. that came over to watch some Petanque Competition.
This Picture is worth a thousand words, you see the Pointer squatting down and playing a Boule while the two partners look on, one directly behind and the other from the side, you see the boule landing and the only thing in motion is the dirt/sand splashing up as it's making contact with the Ground and just a couple of feet away is just the objective of reaching the cochonette and everyone is unaware that this Picture is being taken.

PORTLAND PLAYS WITH THE BIG KIDS, NOW!

The team from the Portland Petanque Club, NW Region, consisting of Joe Cortright, Desmond Grattan, and Van Woolfe made an amazing showing at the WCQT in Boca Raton that finished up Sunday afternoon, 12 November. They played consistently well and inevitably rose in the standings, proving to our club that, in our fifth year since forming, we can field a team as strong as any in the country
The fellows placed a phenomenal 4th out of 20 teams, and were just barely not in the final match, being outscored by the NY team that eventually took first place, and were thereby shunted into the match for 3rd and 4th, where they were again outscored, leaving them at number 4 of 20.
Beginning with the eliminations Sunday morning, it was a joy to watch them making point after point and shooting so well on difficult courts. They even fannied a very strong California team who had every hope, themselves, of winning the tournament.
No doubt every player who attended came back with some good stories, of courtside drama, other fannies made, the very strong showing from the Bay Area Womens' World Championship hopefuls Erin, Narin, and Pim, the rocky and unpredictable courts, and even the fine weather. (And, oh yes, a late night boules game on the paving stones outside the Awards Dinner restaurant(Desmond!!!).
This was a good one to have attended.

NE Regional Triplet 2006

A little belatedly, here's a recap of the NE Regional Triplet Tournaments held on Sept 9, 2006 in Worcester, Massachusetts.....

24 players from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine and New York played in the unseasonably warm 80F+ temperatures. The gravelly terrain at Greenhill Park provided its usual challenges as pointeurs searched for la belle donnee and tireurs who were not au fer found themselves not getting the bounce they expected. At the end of many well played and collegial matches, most were satisfied for having taken on the terrain. The results:

1st Place: Richard "Ti' Meas, Hery Rakotoarivony, Hans Jepson (La Boule NewYorkaise)
2nd Place: Mark Kindschi, Mia Kanazawa, Andre Strong (Maine Boules Club)
3rd Place: Brian Walsh, Pete Crowley, Philippe Riand (Le Mistral Club de Petanque)
4th Place: Bob Liberty, Charlie Testa, Paul Dersain
Consolante: Albert Kallanian, Jean-Pierre Kallanian, Levan Bogosian (Le Mistral Club de Petanque)

Photos from Ed Porto

Ed Porto sent me a collection of photos from what appears to be a Panache match held at the Portland Petanque Club - with plenty of Valley of the Moon folks attending.

We see Frank Pipal in his famous wide brimmed hat. As well as Bob & Jane Bosko sampling the delicious food.

Looks like it was an excellent day for boules.
