La Boule New Yorkaise website: Many interesting photos and detailed reports on world pétanque

The website of La Boule New Yorkaise now features the web’s most extensive photos of competitive pétanque in the world: action photos of top players and tournaments taken by Martha Lewis.

The site - http://www.labouleny.com// - also contains reports on (1) the Marseillaise, (2) the Mondial de Millau, (3) the World Championships, and (4) the French National Championships – and these reports will be updated annually.

Surfers will also find the 2006 “letter from Madagascar” with pictures of the tournament that La Boule New Yorkaise and the FPUSA helped to organize last summer.

We would be grateful if you could pass this announcement around, and perhaps even provide a link to the site on your club websites.

VOMPC WINTER MIXED DOUBLES LEAGUE

With 8 mixed doubles teams participating, the VOMPC’s annual Winter League’s regular season got underway in late January and lasted until mid-March. Finishing up the regular season in first place was the team of Barbara Hall/Peter Mathis with a 6-1 record. On Sunday, March 18, the playoffs were contested for the title of League Champions. The semi-finals saw the teams of Holly Sammons/Patrick Vaslet vs. Shannon Bowman/Gilles Karpowicz and Erin McTaggart/Jimmy Flour vs. Barbara Hall/Peter Mathis, with the teams of Shannon/Gilles and Barbara/Peter emerging victorious. The final game can only be described as a lesson in excellent pointing by Shannon, as she and Gilles easily beat Barbara and Peter, 13-4. The team of Erika Schmitt/Frank Pipal won in the Consolante division.
In addition to the aforementioned teams, the following also participated in the league:
Narin Garrett/Hans Kurz
Teri Sirico/Dave Brooks
Carol Davis/Ed Porto

Record FPUSA renewals and new members!

FPUSA Secretary, Frank Pipal, reports that our membership is at a record level this early in the year.
The push this year to get renewals done early in the year has paid off: 1,111 license holders as of March 1st, compared to 1035 at this time last year. Those renewing from previous membership number 980 and we welcome131 who are new to us.
And, you want more breakdown? We have 390 women players (12 juniors), and 721 men (25 juniors). Past experience tells us we can expect these numbers to increase during the year as our activity on the courts increases, becoming more visible to those who don't yet know about our game.
Early renewals and issuance of licenses is the best way to insure that players are eligilble to compete in all the tournaments, especially the ones held early in the year, and it encourages clubs to process their renewals promptly rather than hold them in batches and send them in over several months.
And, it is looking like the push to get our player's photos on their licenses is helping. Doubtless, our photos are better than the ones on a player's driver's license and having a license with a photo seems to make it easier to join in group play when visiting abroad.
Our sincere thanks to all the players and the clubs who have been supportive of renewing at the first of the year.
